Some people say the golden rule in life is to treat others the way you want to be treated, but Jules Grimaldi would disagree. It’s all about the books. Treat your books the way you want to be treated, and all will be well. She’s soaked up words and stories her whole life, and now she’s going into her senior year at North Star University hoping for as much literature as possible: texts for her thesis project, to review for her column in the school newspaper, to be surrounded by at her part-time job.
So, why is it all her plans to sit down and read are too often thwarted? Why can’t her complicated past with Nicolas Reyes simply be that—the past? Why does she have to be the bridge between her sisters? And why does she find herself participating in a campus-wide pen pal program? There are too many books to read and too little time for all these other distractions.
But maybe this will be the year Jules finally realizes the humanity she loves and reads about in literature is the same humanity all around her. It might take a little help from her sisters and the unexpected pen pal to give people—and love—another chance.
